10 Ridiculously Easy Christmas Gift Basket Ideas

There are many themes you can use when crafting your own holiday gift baskets. However, the list below contains some traditional gift basket ideas as well as a few for special friends on your gift list. You can get most of your crafting supplies at local stores like Hobby Lobby, or if you shop on the Internet, simply type "gift basket supplies".

Let's start with one of my favorites to share with your inner family and close friends.

1) The Traditional Christmas Gift Basket:

Fill your basket with hot apple cider mix large mugs, homemade Christmas ornaments, a letter or poem on why Christmas is important to you, matching mittens, hat and scarf (or, depending on your climate you could substitute sunglasses, sun block lotion, a cool destination theme cap) some mistletoe and or other fragrant scents. You could even include a popular Christmas music CD, and for a super nice touch... some home made Christmas cookies - with the recipe included.

2) Christmas Decorating Gift Basket

Fill a basket with nativity set, assorted Christmas ornaments (store bought, but better if hand-made by you,) decorative lights, homemade candles or seasonal candles from your local craft store and a little traditional mistletoe and holly

3) Coffee Lovers Gift basket

Fill a basket with gourmet coffees, coffee mugs, novels, or books on coffee regions and making processes, dark chocolates, and a decorative bookmark that you make yourself)

4) Chocolate Lover's Gift Basket

Fill a basket with, chocolate cookies (home baked is best,) chocolate bonbons, chocolate sauces, chocolate syrup, chocolate dipped coffee spoons and for a special touch wrap them in cellophane with a bow, hot chocolate mix, chocolate covered coffee beans, chocolate flavored coffee beans and some chocolate recipes from around the world

5) Christmas Survival Kit

Spray paint a basket white, then stencil the International Red Cross symbol on each side. Fill the basket with Tylenol - to take away the headache of overdoing, Tea - to calm, relax, and soothe away the tension, peppermints - to settle the tummy from overindulging, Slimfast - to kick off the diet you will need to start, pocket date book - to track all of the 'to do's, CD that includes soothing quiet music to listen to while wrapping gifts, tape - to use to wrap the gifts because you forgot to buy any, a package of gift tags that you made, your favorite quick and easy yummy cookie cookie recipe and last, but not least include some nice bath oil or bubble bath to soothe the weary body

6) Faraway Grandparent (or relative) Gift basket

Fill a basket with children's artwork, gifts made by the kids, frames for family pictures (let the kids buy plain wooden frames and decorate them with stickers,) videos of the family, a long-distance calling card. Extras: fill out the basket with candy, coffee, tea, biscuits, Christmas ornaments, candles, etc. Include printed notes from the kids with "why I love you Grandma/Pa sentiments)

7) Golf Lover's Gift Basket

For the golfer, fill a basket or a golf bag with golf tees, golf balls, a baseball cap, sunscreen, score cards, a small towel, a can cooler to keep a can of pop or beer cold. A nice touch is to personalize the towel or baseball cap (you can stitch on them, use fabric paints, etc.)

8) Fisherman's Gift Basket

Find a large basket or, use a tackle box and fill with assorted lures, leaders, long nose fishing pliers, gloves, guide to local fishing, DVD's on fishing tournaments, and gift certificate for a rod or reel

9) Baby Boomer's Gift Basket

Fill a basket with books and magazines on men or women's health issues, a variety of herbal teas, skin care lotions for maturing skin, hair care products with herbal scents, skin care accessories such as exotic sponges, brushes and loofahs, humorous coffee mugs, 60's CD's of great groups like the Beatles and of course... humorous articles on aging

10) Father/ Mother Gift basket

How to Make a Rubber Band Gun

Back in the days when kids made a lot of their toys, some devious little mind came up with a way to fire rubber bands off more than their own thumbs. Thus was born the rubber band gun. Today, they're enjoying such a resurgence of popularity, that you can even buy guns carved from wood, that replicate actual weapons such as repeating rifles, pistols and more.

But for a simply weapon to give your friends a snapping good time, try this. Gather up a piece of wood, such as a short section of 1x2" lumber, a wooden clothespin, some Crazy Glue, a nail and a hammer.

You're going to want to glue the clothespin at the rear of the 1" side, which should be on top. But first, take a nail no more than 2" long, and 1/8" thick, and cut the flat head off, and file it down. Mark on the piece of wood, where the end of the clothespin will be, and drive the nail into the wood, sharp end down, about 1/3" from where the mark is. Leave about 3/4" of the nail sticking up.

Now drill a hole through the end of the clothespin, with a bit that is slightly larger than the width of the nail. Make sure you drill through both sides of the pin. Apply glue to one narrow side of the clothespin, from the open end, down to the drilled hole. Don't get glue in the hole. Now place the clothespin on the piece of 1x2", making sure it's got the nail fitted through the hole. You might want to try the fit, before applying the glue.

Cut a notch in the end of your wood, just below the top, so you can hook one end of the rubber band there. Now pull it back, and hook the other end over the protruding nail. To fire, just open the clothespin. There should be enough motion to allow the upper part of the pin, to push the rubber band off.

For more zing to your gun, cut a second shorter piece of wood and glue it underneath at a 90-degree angle, to approximate the shape of a pistol. Insert your nail and glue your clothespin to the back of the "grip". This will make for a longer stretch to the band, and more snap when you fire.

5 Recycling Projects You Can Sew

Many sewing projects take a lot of fabric to make them and the cost can really add up, especially if you are on a budget. The good news is that you don't have to spend a lot of money if you think outside the box. Take a look around your house and really think about what you have at hand. Chances are, you'll find some old clothes, bed sheets and fabric scraps just taking up room.

So, what will you do with those old things? Throw them out or give them away? Don't do that! Those old clothes are perfect for creating new items. It's recycling at its best and it's quickly becoming the trendy thing to do. It's not really a new idea however, because it's something our grandmothers and grandmothers did years ago. They knew how to re-use every item and didn't waste anything.

But what exactly did they do with old, worn out clothes and left over fabric? To help get you started, here are five quick and easy project ideas to show you what you can make from old clothes, bed sheets and fabric scraps.

Project #1: Use old clothes or fabric scraps to create quilts. There are several different types of quilts that require small patches of fabric, such as postage stamp, crazy or memory quilts. The basic idea for all these different types of quilts is the same. Cut out small shapes and sew them together. The shapes are often different colours, which when sewn together form a pattern. The pattern, shape and size of the fabric patches then determine which type of quilt has been created.

Project #2: Turn old bed sheets into curtains, pillowcases, throw pillows or other decorative home décor items. Bed sheets work very well for these items, especially if the bed sheets have shrunk in the wash, become stained, or slightly worn out in one spot. You can cut around that spot and use the rest of the bed sheet, which is likely still in good shape.

Project #3: Use old clothes or fabric scraps to create your own dolls. Keep them for yourself or give them away as gifts. The dolls can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be. They can have one pattern piece to follow or they can have several pieces that are cut and sewn together to form the doll.

Either way, start by simply cutting out the pattern pieces. Then, sew them together with the right side facing together. Remember to leave an opening, so that you can turn the doll inside out and then add stuffing. Sew the opening shut and add eyes, hair, clothes or anything else you want to finish the doll.

Project #4: Use old clothes or even bed sheets to create new clothes. Most people at one point in time have turned old jeans into shorts, but you can go even further than that. For example, turn the old jeans into a skirt by cutting the legs off and then adding strips of fabric to give the skirt length. Or cut up old clothes to create scarves, shawls, headbands or more. The only limit is your imagination!

Project #5: Create your own Christmas ornaments from fabric scraps. If you love to sew, you know how quickly the scraps can pile up. One great way to use up these scraps is to make your own decorations. Plus, it's so easy! Simply draw different shapes on a piece of paper. For example, you could draw Christmas trees, stars, hearts, circles or any other shape that you associate with Christmas. Then, cut out the shape and either pin it to a piece of fabric or trace it on the fabric. Then cut out at least two pieces of the same shape and sew them together. Leave a little opening so that you can fill it with stuffing. Sew the opening shut and add charms or ribbons to finish off the ornament. Add a string at the top and hang the ornament on your tree with pride!
